Cicindela (Myriochile) semicincta (Brullé, 1834). Tiger Beetle
Rocky Cape National Park
Mid January 2012
Tiger Beetles occur world wide but have always been reported as absent from Antarctica, Tasmania, Hawaii, and a few isolated islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This individual is the first record of a Tiger Beetle in Tasmania. The question is whether it is a vagrant (lucky individual that made it here), or whether there are established colonies that people haven’t noticed before.
Identification thanks to Jürgen Wiesner and David Pearson.
