Subgenus Cerodontha have two scutellar bristles and a produced angle on the upper corner of the third antennal segment. Subgenus Butomomyza are usually largely dark, have four scutellar bristles, the third antennal segment is rouded, and the lunule above the antennal insertions is broad and high.
