Helosciomyzidae are a relict group of flies with restricted distribution. The majority of species are found in New Zealand and temperate Australia. Australia has 16 described species across five genera. Tasmania has three genera: Helosciomyza (7 spp.), Neosciomyza (1 sp.) and Cobergius (1sp.). Mountainous or cooler areas are typical habitat, some species of Helosciomyza are less restricted (eg. H. bickeli and H. fuscinevris), while Cobergius vittata is only found around island seashores.
