There are three described species of the Australian piophilid genus Piophilosoma. It appears all three are found on the mainland and Tasmania. Piophoilosoma antipodum and P. norrisi have dark hairing at the sides of the thorax, the former species with head vertex with three dark spots, the lateral spots touching the eyes and with middle spot forward over ocelli, and scutum usually with 3 dark stripes (variously formed). The latter species lacks developed dark marks on the head (if so then over ocelli) and scutum. P. palpatum lacks the dark hairing at sides of thorax and with dark markings on head and scutum similar to P. antipodum but with without dark lateral spots on the vertex.
