Pelecorhynchus nr. nigripennis – following the key in Mackerras & Fuller (1942), the flies below key out to P. nigripennis. They resemble that species by the wing solid dark patterning, reddish hairs laterally on thorax and parafacials (though not as bright in colour), and abdomen with wide pale fasciae and dark abdominal fasciae with wide pale medial indentations. They differ by scutum lateral colour not black (more deep brown) and containing large light grey patches. See the Key to Tasmanian Pelecorhynchus species for more comparisons.
