The alternata complex consists of Psychodini species characterised by wings dark-spotted at the end of the longitudinal veins (may be weakly spotted in teneral individual), and the last three antennal segments diminutive and fused (ie with no separation). The wings are folded over the abdomen. In Australia this complex consists of Psychoda alternata and P. psuedalternata.
