Megaselia rufipes is a near cosmopolitan species. The larvae will feed on various decaying plant matter. Adult males have abdominal bristles feathered, giving them a very thick appearance.

This pupa never successfully completed to adult eclosion. In the last two shots, captured close to a month after the pupa was collected, a nearly formed adult can be seen inside.
